INSULIN ISOPHANE NPH

INSULIN ISOPHANE NPH: Drug: Insulin Isophane NPH
Brand Name: NPH insulin, Humulin N, Novolin N

Use:
Insulin Isophane NPH is a type of insulin that is used to control blood sugar levels in individuals with diabetes. It is primarily used to provide basal (long-acting) insulin coverage throughout the day and night. It helps to regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating the uptake and utilization of glucose by cells and inhibiting the release of glucose from the liver.

Mechanism of Action:
Insulin Isophane NPH contains crystalline suspensions of protamine and insulin, which provide an intermediate-acting formulation of insulin. After subcutaneous injection, the protamine arrests the release of the insulin, resulting in a delayed onset and a more prolonged duration of action. This allows for a stable level of insulin in the body between meals and overnight.

Dose:
The dosage of Insulin Isophane NPH is individualized based on the patient’s blood sugar levels, response to treatment, and other factors. It is typically administered subcutaneously once or twice a day, usually 30 minutes before a meal.

Side Effects:
1. Hypoglycemia: The most common side effect of Insulin Isophane NPH is low blood sugar. Symptoms may include sweating, dizziness, shaking, confusion, and headache. Prompt treatment with glucose or high-sugar food is necessary to raise blood sugar levels.
2. Injection-site reactions: Redness, swelling, or pain may occur at the injection site. Rotating injection sites and proper injection technique can help minimize these reactions.
3. Allergic reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Insulin Isophane NPH. Symptoms can include rash, itching, and difficulty breathing. Seek medical attention if any allergic reactions occur.
4. Weight gain: Insulin use, including Insulin Isophane NPH, can cause weight gain due to increased glucose uptake by cells.
5. Hypokalemia: In some cases, Insulin Isophane NPH can cause low potassium levels in the blood, which may result in muscle weakness, muscle cramps, and irregular heartbeat.
6. Lipodystrophy: Repeated injections at the same site can cause fat tissue accumulation (lipodystrophy), resulting in lumps or dimples under the skin.

It is important to note that this is not a complete list of side effects, and other rare or severe side effects may occur. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive understanding of the drug and its potential side effects before starting treatment.
