LOSARTAN

LOSARTAN: Losartan is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It is used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with an enlarged heart and high blood pressure.

The mechanism of action of losartan involves blocking the action of a hormone called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to narrow, which leads to increased blood pressure. By blocking the actions of angiotensin II, losartan relaxes and widens the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and reducing blood pressure.

The usual starting dose of losartan for adults with hypertension is 50 mg once daily, which may be increased to a maximum dose of 100 mg once daily if necessary. For patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, the recommended starting dose is 50 mg once daily, and the maintenance dose is 50-100 mg once daily.

As with any medication, losartan can cause certain side effects. Common side effects may include dizziness, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, and upper respiratory tract infection. More serious side effects, although rare, may include allergic reactions, kidney problems, and low blood pressure. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a complete list of potential side effects and to discuss any concerns or pre-existing medical conditions before starting losartan.
