AZELAIC ACID

AZELAIC ACID: AZELAIC ACID is a medication used to treat acne vulgaris and rosacea. It belongs to the class of drugs known as dicarboxylic acids. Azelaic acid is available in gel, cream, and foam formulations and is applied topically to the affected skin.

The exact mechanism of action of azelaic acid in treating acne and rosacea is not fully understood. However, it is believed to work by having both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. It inhibits the growth of certain bacteria that contribute to acne, such as Propionibacterium acnes, and reduces inflammation associated with both acne and rosacea.

The dosage of azelaic acid depends on the formulation being used. For acne, a 20% cream or gel is typically applied twice daily after cleaning the affected area. For rosacea, a 15% gel or foam is usually applied twice daily after washing the affected skin.

Common side effects of azelaic acid include skin dryness, itching, burning, stinging, and redness at the application site. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. Occasionally, some individuals may experience more severe skin reactions, such as blistering, crusting, or severe skin irritation. If any of these occur, it is recommended to discontinue the medication and consult a healthcare professional.

Azelaic acid is generally well-tolerated and does not have significant systemic side effects, as the majority of the medication remains in the skin. However, rare cases of allergic reactions have been reported, including rash, hives, and swelling. If any signs of an allergic reaction occur, immediate medical attention should be sought.

Azelaic acid should be used with caution in individuals with known sensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new medication to ensure it is suitable for your specific condition.
