BP MONITORS

Blood pressure monitors are essential medical devices used to measure the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries. There are two types of blood pressure monitors commonly used:

  • Digital and
  • Mercury-based

Digital blood pressure monitors are highly convenient and user-friendly. They employ an oscillometric technique to measure blood pressure, where the monitor automatically inflates and deflates the cuff, providing accurate readings on a digital display. They are portable, easy to use, and offer various additional features like memory storage and irregular heartbeat detection.

On the other hand, mercury-based blood pressure monitors use a column of mercury to measure blood pressure. Although they have been largely replaced by digital monitors due to safety concerns, they are still regarded as the gold standard by healthcare professionals for their accuracy and reliability. However, they require skilled personnel to operate, are non-portable, and can be hazardous if mishandled.

Overall, blood pressure monitors, regardless of the type, play a crucial role in monitoring and managing hypertension, ensuring early detection of potential health risks.
