DESLORATADINE
DESLORATADINE: Desloratadine is an antihistamine medication used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and hives (urticaria). It is sold under various brand names, including Clarinex, Aerius, and Neoclarityn.
The drug works by blocking the actions of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergy symptoms. Histamine is released by the immune system during an allergic reaction, leading to symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itching, and watery eyes. By blocking the histamine receptors, desloratadine helps alleviate these symptoms.
The usual adult dose of desloratadine is 5 mg once daily. For children, the dose varies based on their age and weight. It is available as tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and syrup. It can be taken with or without food.
Common side effects of desloratadine include drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, and sore throat. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. In rare cases, more severe side effects may occur, such as allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling), rapid or irregular heartbeat, or jaundice. If any of these serious side effects occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Desloratadine is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for most individuals. However, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new medication, especially for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or those taking other medications. They can provide personalized dosing instructions and help assess potential drug interactions.
