DIENOGEST: Dienogest is a synthetic progestogen medication that falls under the class of drugs known as selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs). It is primarily used as an oral contraceptive pill to prevent pregnancy, but it also has other medical indications.
The primary mechanism of action of dienogest is its ability to inhibit ovulation by suppressing the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, which is essential for the release of an egg from the ovary. The drug also thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and fertilize an egg. Additionally, dienogest alters the lining of the uterus, reducing the chances of implantation.
When used as an oral contraceptive, dienogest is typically prescribed as a combination pill, which contains both dienogest and an estrogen called ethinyl estradiol. Common brands that contain dienogest include Yasmin, Yaz, and Qlaira.
