FLUTICASONE

FLUTICASONE: Fluticasone is a synthetic corticosteroid drug that is commonly used in the treatment of inflammatory conditions such as asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever).

Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the production of various inflammatory mediators, such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins, which are responsible for allergic and inflammatory responses in the body. By reducing inflammation, fluticasone helps to alleviate symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and nasal congestion.

Fluticasone is available in various forms, including nasal sprays, inhalers, and topical creams. The recommended dosage and administration can vary depending on the specific condition being treated.

For allergic rhinitis, fluticasone nasal sprays are commonly used. The usual recommended dose for adults and children 12 years and older is 1 to 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. In some cases, the dose may be increased to 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily for severe symptoms. Children between the ages of 4 and 11 typically require 1 spray in each nostril once daily.

For asthma, fluticasone is usually prescribed in the form of an inhaler. The recommended dose can vary depending on the severity of the condition, but a common starting dose for adults and children over the age of 12 is 100 to 250 mcg twice daily. The dose may be adjusted based on individual response.

Fluticasone can also be used topically in the treatment of certain skin conditions. The cream or ointment should be applied thinly to the affected area once or twice daily.

Common side effects of fluticasone can include nasal irritation or dryness, headache, sore throat, nosebleeds, cough, and changes in taste or smell. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, long-term use of high doses of fluticasone may increase the risk of systemic side effects such as adrenal suppression, glaucoma, cataracts, and growth retardation in children. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and consult a healthcare professional if any concerning side effects occur.
