GEMFIBROZIL
GEMFIBROZIL: GEMFIBROZIL is a medication used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and to increase the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (also known as “good” cholesterol). It is primarily prescribed to individuals with high levels of triglycerides or those at risk of developing pancreatitis.
The mechanism of action of GEMFIBROZIL involves the activation of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down triglycerides in the blood. This leads to a decrease in the production and increase in the clearance of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles, resulting in lower triglyceride levels. GEMFIBROZIL also reduces the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol produced by the liver and increases the production of HDL cholesterol.
The usual dose of GEMFIBROZIL is 600 mg taken orally twice daily, preferably 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner. The effectiveness of the drug is maximized when it is taken with food.
While GEMFIBROZIL is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, and diarrhea. Less common but more severe side effects may include myopathy (muscle pain or weakness), allergic reactions, and liver problems. It is important to notify a healthcare professional if any unusual or severe side effects occur.
GEMFIBROZIL may interact with other medications, so it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking to avoid any potential drug interactions. Additionally, GEMFIBROZIL should not be taken by individuals with pre-existing liver or kidney disease, gallbladder disease, or those with a history of allergic reactions to the drug. It is always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before starting or stopping any medication.
