INSULINS
INSULINS: Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels. Insulin medications, commonly referred to as insulins, are used to treat diabetes mellitus.
Mechanism of Action:
Insulin works by allowing glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream to enter the cells, where it is utilized for energy production. It also helps store excess glucose in the liver for later use. In individuals with diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or the body’s cells do not respond effectively to insulin (Type 2 diabetes). Insulin medications supplement the body’s insulin supply and help regulate blood sugar levels.
Use:
Insulins are used to manage both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetics require insulin injections as their pancreas does not produce any insulin. Type 2 diabetics may also require insulin if their blood sugar levels cannot be controlled adequately through diet, exercise, and other oral medications.
Dose:
The dose of insulin varies depending on the individual’s needs, type of diabetes, blood sugar levels, and lifestyle factors. It is usually administered subcutaneously (under the skin) using an insulin syringe, pen, or pump. The dosage and timing of insulin administration are typically determined by healthcare professionals and may require adjustment over time.
Side Effects:
While insulin therapy is generally safe, it may lead to certain side effects. These can include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which manifests as symptoms such as shakiness, dizziness, confusion, sweating, and weakness. Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) is another possible side effect if the insulin dose is inadequate. Other potential side effects include injection site reactions like redness, swelling, or itching. In rare cases, allergic reactions can occur, leading to symptoms such as rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
It’s important to note that the specific side effects and their severity can vary depending on the type and brand of insulin used. It is essential to discuss potential side effects and any concerns with a healthcare provider before starting insulin therapy.
