LEVETIRACETAM TAB: Levetiracetam is a medication primarily used for the treatment of seizures in patients with epilepsy. It belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Levetiracetam tablets are available with different strengths ranging from 250 mg to 1500 mg.

The exact mechanism of action of levetiracetam is not fully understood. However, it is believed to work by inhibiting abnormal electrical activity in the brain, thus reducing the occurrence of seizures. It may also stabilize neuronal membranes and modulate neurotransmitter release.

The dose of levetiracetam varies depending on the patient’s age, weight, and the severity of their condition. The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice daily, taken orally. The dose may be gradually increased by 500 mg every two weeks if needed, with a maximum recommended dose of 3000 mg per day. For children, the dosage is based on their weight and is usually initiated at 10 mg/kg twice daily.

Common side effects of levetiracetam may include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, fatigue, irritability, weakness, and loss of appetite. These side effects are usually mild and transient. Less frequently, patients may experience psychiatric symptoms such as mood changes, aggression, anxiety, or depression. It is important to monitor any unusual behavior or changes in mood while taking this medication. Severe allergic reactions, including rash, itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing, are rare but require immediate medical attention.

It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions provided by the healthcare provider. Abruptly stopping levetiracetam can increase the risk of seizures, so it should be gradually tapered off under medical supervision if discontinuation is necessary.
