LOPERAMIDE
LOPERAMIDE: Loperamide is a medication used to treat diarrhea. It is an over-the-counter medication and is available in tablet, capsule, or liquid form. Loperamide works by slowing down the movement of the intestines, which helps to reduce the frequency and urgency of bowel movements.
The recommended dose of loperamide for adults is initially 4 mg, followed by 2 mg after each loose stool, up to a maximum of 8 mg per day. For children aged 2 to 5 years, the initial dose is 1 mg followed by 0.5 mg after each loose stool, up to a maximum of 3 mg per day. For children aged 6 to 8 years, the initial dose is 2 mg, followed by 1 mg after each loose stool, up to a maximum of 4 mg per day.
Loperamide is generally well-tolerated, but like any medication, it can cause side effects. The most common side effects of loperamide include constipation, nausea, stomach pain, and dizziness. Less common but potentially serious side effects may include allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. It is important to seek medical attention if any severe side effects occur.
Loperamide should not be used if there is a possibility of bacterial infection in the intestines, as it may prolong the infection. It is also important to note that loperamide is not recommended for use in children under 2 years old unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider.
It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional or read the package insert for specific instructions and precautions before taking loperamide.
