MEFENAMIC ACID

MEFENAMIC ACID: Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is primarily used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. It is commonly prescribed for the treatment of menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

The exact mechanism of action of mefenamic acid is not fully understood, but it is believed to work by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are substances that contribute to pain, inflammation, and fever in the body. By reducing prostaglandin levels, mefenamic acid helps to alleviate pain and decrease inflammation.

Mefenamic acid is available in the form of capsules or tablets, typically with a strength of 250 mg or 500 mg. The recommended dose may vary depending on the condition being treated and individual patient factors. For menstrual pain, the usual dose is 500 mg at the onset of symptoms, followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed for up to 1 week. For other conditions, the typical dose is 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours, as directed by a healthcare professional.

Like other NSAIDs, mefenamic acid can cause certain side effects. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal problems such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, and constipation. It may also cause dizziness, drowsiness, headache, rash, or allergic reactions in some individuals. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as stomach ulcers or bleeding, liver problems, and kidney problems may occur. It is important to seek medical attention if any severe or persistent side effects are experienced.

As mefenamic acid belongs to the NSAID class of drugs, it carries the same risks and precautions associated with this group. It is not recommended for use in patients with a history of allergic reactions to NSAIDs, asthma, bleeding disorders, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It may interact with certain medications, including blood thinners, diuretics, and certain high blood pressure medications, so it is essential to inform the healthcare provider about all current medications and medical history before using mefenamic acid.
