MONTELUKAST

MONTELUKAST: Drug: Montelukast

Use: Montelukast is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of asthma, seasonal allergies, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. It is also used to manage symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, and itching.

Mechanism of Action: Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist, which means it works by blocking the action of leukotrienes in the body. Leukotrienes are chemicals in the body that are responsible for causing inflammation, constriction of airways, and other allergic reactions. By inhibiting the action of leukotrienes, montelukast helps to reduce inflammation and open up the airways, making breathing easier.

Dose: The dosage of montelukast varies depending on the patient’s age and the condition being treated. The usual recommended dose for adults and adolescents (15 years and older) is 10 mg once daily. For children 6 to 14 years old, the recommended dose is 5 mg once daily. For children 2 to 5 years old, the recommended dose is 4 mg once daily. Montelukast should be taken as directed by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects: Common side effects of montelukast may include headache, fever, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, dizziness, and nasal congestion. Rare but serious side effects may include mood or behavior changes, including suicidal thoughts or actions, tremors, hallucinations, allergic reactions, and liver problems.

It is important to note that while montelukast can effectively manage asthma and allergies, it does not provide immediate relief for acute asthma attacks. In case of an asthma attack, a short-acting bronchodilator medication should be used. Montelukast should be taken regularly as prescribed for long-term control of symptoms.
