RACECADOTRIL
RACECADOTRIL: Racecadotril is a medication used to treat acute diarrhea in adults and children over 3 months old. It is commonly sold under the brand name Hidrasec.
The mechanism of action of racecadotril involves inhibiting the enzyme enkephalinase, which is responsible for the breakdown of enkephalins, naturally occurring substances that regulate intestinal function. By inhibiting enkephalinase, racecadotril increases the levels of enkephalins in the intestine, leading to a reduction in fluid and electrolyte secretion and an improvement in the symptoms of diarrhea.
The recommended dose of racecadotril for adults and children over 12 years old is 100 mg (1 capsule) taken three times a day. For children between 6 months and 12 years old, the dose is calculated based on body weight, usually at a rate of 1.5 mg per kg of body weight per day, divided into three daily doses. Racecadotril should be taken orally with or without food.
Common side effects of racecadotril include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and headache. These side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own. Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or itching may occur, and in such cases, medical attention should be sought immediately.
It is important to note that racecadotril should not be used in patients with severe diarrhea associated with fever or blood in the stool, as these symptoms may indicate a more serious underlying condition that requires alternative treatment.
Racecadotril is generally well-tolerated and has a good safety profile. However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new medication to ensure it is appropriate for individual circumstances.
