SAFINAMIDE

SAFINAMIDE: Safinamide is a medication primarily used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. It is marketed under the brand name Xadago.

Mechanism of Action: Safinamide is a selective monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitor. MAO-B is an enzyme that breaks down dopamine in the brain. By inhibiting MAO-B, safinamide increases levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is deficient in Parkinson’s disease, leading to improved motor function.

Use: Safinamide is prescribed as an adjunctive therapy for Parkinson’s disease in patients who already take levodopa/carbidopa. It helps to control “off” episodes, which are characterized by a return of Parkinson’s symptoms when the effect of levodopa wears off.

Dosage: The recommended starting dose of safinamide is 50 mg once daily, which can be gradually increased to a maximum of 100 mg per day based on individual patient response.

Side Effects: Common side effects of safinamide can include nausea, headache, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, falls, and dyskinesia (abnormal involuntary movements). Less common but more serious side effects may include hallucinations, serotonin syndrome (in rare cases when taken with antidepressants), and hypersensitivity reactions.

It is important to note that safinamide may interact with other medications such as antidepressants, opioids, and certain antibiotics, so it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all the drugs you are taking before starting safinamide.

As with any medication, it is essential to follow the prescribed dose and consult with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance and monitoring throughout the treatment.
