TORASEMIDE

TORASEMIDE: Drug: Torasemide

Use: Torasemide is a loop diuretic that is used to treat edema (fluid retention) caused by conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease. It is also used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure).

Mechanism of Action: Torasemide works by blocking the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions in the kidney tubules. This leads to increased urine production and excretion of excess fluid, reducing edema and helping to lower blood pressure.

Dose: The recommended dose of torasemide may vary depending on the specific condition being treated. Typically, the initial dose for edema is 5-10 mg once daily, which may be increased by the doctor if necessary. For hypertension, the starting dose is usually 2.5-5 mg once daily, with possible dosage adjustments.

Side Effects: Common side effects of torasemide include increased urination, dizziness, headache, nausea, and muscle cramps. These are generally mild and resolve on their own. However, more serious side effects may occur, including severe electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium or sodium levels), allergic reactions, rash, and liver or kidney problems. It is important to contact a healthcare professional if any concerning side effects occur.
