TRIMETAZIDINE

TRIMETAZIDINE: Drug: Trimetazidine

Use: Trimetazidine is primarily used to treat angina pectoris (chest pain) associated with coronary artery disease. It helps to improve the blood supply to the heart, preventing or relieving the symptoms of angina.

Mechanism of Action: Trimetazidine works by shifting the heart’s energy metabolism from fatty acid oxidation to glucose oxidation. It inhibits the enzyme 3-ketoacyl coenzyme A thiolase, which reduces the oxidation of fatty acids and promotes glucose oxidation. This improves cellular energy production and helps maintain myocardial function in ischemic conditions.

Dose: The usual recommended dose of trimetazidine is 20 mg, taken orally three times daily. However, the dose may vary depending on the patient’s condition and the severity of symptoms. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and instructions provided by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects: The most common side effects of trimetazidine include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and gastrointestinal disturbances. These side effects are usually mild and transient. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as allergic reactions, skin rash, and liver dysfunction may occur. It is important to consult a doctor if any side effects are experienced.
