VIT D
VIT D: Drug: VIT D (Vitamin D)
Use: VIT D is used as a dietary supplement to prevent or treat vitamin D deficiency. It helps the body absorb calcium and support bone health. It is also used to treat conditions such as osteoporosis, rickets, and hypoparathyroidism.
Mechanism of Action: VIT D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is converted in the body to an active hormone called calcitriol. Calcitriol helps regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body, promoting their absorption in the intestines and facilitating their deposition in bones. It also plays a role in maintaining normal immune system function.
Dose: The recommended daily dose of VIT D varies depending on age, sex, and health condition. For adults and children over 1 year of age, the general recommended dose is 600 to 800 International Units (IU) per day. In cases of deficiency or specific medical conditions, higher doses may be prescribed under medical supervision.
Side Effects: VIT D is generally considered safe when taken as recommended. However, excessive intake of VIT D can lead to a condition called vitamin D toxicity or vitamin D overdose. Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity may include nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, confusion, and increased thirst. High levels of vitamin D can also lead to an elevated level of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause kidney stones, bone pain, weakness, and frequent urination.
It is important to consult a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate dose and monitor vitamin D levels if using supplements, as excessive intake can be harmful.
