ARTESUNATE

ARTESUNATE: Artesunate is an antimalarial drug that is part of the artemisinin class. It is primarily used for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which is a parasite transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

The mechanism of action of artesunate involves the activation of endoperoxide bridges within the malaria parasite, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species. This oxidative stress damages the parasite’s cell membranes and organelles, ultimately resulting in its death.

The recommended dose of artesunate depends on the severity of the malaria infection and the patient’s age. For adults with severe malaria, the typical dose is 2.4 mg/kg of body weight administered intravenously over a period of 3-5 minutes, followed by additional doses at 12 and 24 hours after the initial dose. For children, the dose is 2.4 mg/kg followed by additional doses at 12 and 24 hours.

Common side effects of artesunate may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and itching. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as allergic reactions, liver toxicity, and blood disorders may occur. It is important to seek medical attention if any severe or persistent side effects are experienced while taking artesunate.
