DESOGESTREL

DESOGESTREL: Desogestrel is a synthetic progestin, commonly used as a hormonal contraceptive. It is sold under various brand names such as Cerazette, Marvelon, Mercilon, and Mircette.

Desogestrel works primarily by suppressing ovulation, thereby preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. It also alters the cervical mucus, making it thicker and less hospitable for sperm to reach the uterus. Additionally, it changes the lining of the uterus, making it less suitable for implantation of a fertilized egg.

The usual dose of desogestrel is one pill taken orally every day, without any breaks. It is important to take the pill at the same time each day to maintain its effectiveness. It is a highly effective contraceptive if used correctly, with a failure rate of less than 1% with perfect use. However, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so additional barrier methods such as condoms are recommended for STI prevention.

As with any medication, desogestrel may cause side effects. Some common side effects include irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting, breast tenderness or pain, headache, nausea, bloating, mood changes, and weight gain. These side effects are usually mild and resolve over time. However, if these symptoms persist or become severe, it is advised to consult a healthcare professional.

It is important to note that desogestrel is contraindicated in individuals with a history of blood clots, liver disease, certain cancers, or known hypersensitivity to the drug. It is always recommended to consult a healthcare professional before starting desogestrel or any hormonal contraceptive to discuss individual health and suitability.
