DOMPERIDONE

DOMPERIDONE: DOMPERIDONE is a medication used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. It belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine receptor antagonists.

The primary mechanism of action of Domperidone is as a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the receptors in the brain that trigger nausea and vomiting, thus preventing these symptoms. Additionally, it increases the movement and contractions of the stomach and intestines, which helps in relieving symptoms related to indigestion.

The usual recommended adult oral dose of Domperidone is 10-20 mg taken three to four times a day, 15 to 30 minutes before meals. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and duration as directed by the healthcare provider.

Like any medication, Domperidone may cause side effects. Common side effects include dry mouth, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and constipation. In rare cases, serious side effects such as allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling), irregular heartbeat, and muscle spasms may occur. If any severe or persisting side effects are experienced, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Domperidone is generally considered safe for most people when used as prescribed. However, it is important to note that Domperidone is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug, those with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction or perforation, or those with pheochromocytoma (a tumor of the adrenal gland).

It is always recommended to consult a healthcare professional or pharmacist before starting or making any changes to the medication regimen, as they can provide personalized advice based on an individual’s medical history and specific circumstances.
