EFLORNITHINE
EFLORNITHINE: Drug: Eflornithine (Vaniqa)
Use: Eflornithine is a prescription medication that is primarily used to treat unwanted facial hair growth in women. It is specifically indicated for the reduction of unwanted facial hair growth in women with a condition called hirsutism. It should only be used on the face and under the chin.
Mechanism of Action: Eflornithine works by inhibiting an enzyme called ornithine decarboxylase, which is involved in the production of a substance called polyamines. Polyamines are necessary for cell division and growth, and by inhibiting this enzyme, eflornithine slows down the growth of hair cells, eventually leading to a reduction in hair growth.
Dose: Eflornithine comes in the form of a cream and should be applied to the affected areas twice daily, at least 8 hours apart. It is important to follow the instructions provided by the healthcare provider, as the application may vary based on individual needs.
Side Effects: The most common side effects of eflornithine cream include stinging, burning, tingling, or rash at the application site. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. In rare cases, more severe allergic reactions may occur, such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If any of these occur, medical attention should be sought immediately. It is important to note that eflornithine does not permanently remove facial hair, and the effects may reverse if the medication is discontinued.
