FENOFIBRATE

FENOFIBRATE: Fenofibrate is a medication used to reduce high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It belongs to a class of drugs known as fibric acid derivatives. In addition to lowering lipid levels, fenofibrate also helps to increase levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL) and decrease levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and total cholesterol.

The exact mechanism of action of fenofibrate is not fully understood. It is believed to work by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha). This receptor regulates the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism, leading to decreased synthesis and increased clearance of triglycerides from the blood.

Fenofibrate comes in oral tablet form and is typically taken once daily with meals. The dose prescribed can vary depending on the individual’s lipid levels, response to treatment, and other factors. The usual starting dose is 145 mg, but it can be adjusted to a maximum dose of 200 mg if necessary.

Common side effects of fenofibrate may include abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dizziness, and muscle pain. In rare cases, fenofibrate can cause more serious side effects such as liver problems or gallstones. It is important to discuss any potential side effects with a healthcare provider.

Fenofibrate is often used as part of a comprehensive approach to managing high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This typically includes lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight management.
