IVABRADINE

IVABRADINE: Ivabradine, sold under the brand name Corlanor, is a medication primarily used to treat heart conditions such as stable angina and symptomatic heart failure.

The mechanism of action of ivabradine involves the selective inhibition of the If current in the sinoatrial (SA) node of the heart. The If current plays a crucial role in regulating the heart rate. By blocking this current, ivabradine slows down the heart rate, leading to reduced oxygen demand and improved cardiac function.

The usual starting dose of ivabradine is 5 mg twice daily, and it can be increased to a maximum of 7.5 mg twice daily based on the patient’s heart rate and symptoms. The dose may be adjusted by the healthcare provider based on individual response and tolerability.

Like any medication, ivabradine may cause side effects. Common side effects include bradycardia (abnormally slow heart rate), high blood pressure, temporary visual disturbances (such as seeing flashes of light or experiencing blurred vision), dizziness, and headache. Some patients may also experience symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, or skin rash. It is important to report any unusual or severe side effects to a healthcare professional.

It is worth noting that ivabradine should not be used in patients with pre-existing conduction defects, severe liver impairment, or those who are currently taking certain medications like strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers. It is always recommended to consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting or changing any medication.
