KETOTIFEN FUMARATE

KETOTIFEN FUMARATE: Ketotifen fumarate is a medication commonly used for the treatment of allergic reactions and asthma. It is available in the form of tablets and eye drops.

The exact mechanism of action of ketotifen fumarate is not fully understood, but it is known to have both antihistamine and mast cell stabilizing properties. This means that it can help reduce the release of histamine and other inflammatory substances from mast cells, thereby alleviating allergic symptoms. Ketotifen also has anti-inflammatory effects, which further contribute to its efficacy in relieving allergies.

For the treatment of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergic conjunctivitis (eye allergies), ketotifen fumarate is available as eye drops. It is used to relieve symptoms such as itching, redness, and watering of the eyes. The recommended dose for adults and children aged 3 years and older is one drop in each affected eye, twice daily.

Ketotifen fumarate tablets are prescribed for the prevention and long-term management of asthma symptoms, including wheezing, shortness of breath, and cough. The usual adult dose is one 1 mg tablet twice daily. For children aged 3 to 10 years, the recommended dose is 0.5 mg twice daily.

Common side effects of ketotifen fumarate may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, and increased appetite. These side effects are generally mild and temporary. In some cases, ketotifen fumarate can cause weight gain or difficulty concentrating. Serious side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If any of these serious side effects occur, immediate medical attention should be sought.

It’s important to note that ketotifen fumarate does not provide immediate relief of acute asthma attacks or severe allergic reactions. It should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
