LAMIVUDINE

LAMIVUDINE: Lamivudine is an antiviral medication used primarily for the treatment of HIV and chronic hepatitis B. It is sold under the brand name Epivir among others.

Lamivudine works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, thereby preventing the replication of the virus. It is classified as a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) and is used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to manage HIV infection.

For the treatment of HIV, the recommended dose of lamivudine is 300 mg once daily, either as a single tablet or in combination with other medications. For the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, the dose is usually 100 mg once daily.

While lamivudine is generally well-tolerated, it may cause some side effects. Common side effects may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and insomnia. Some individuals may experience lactic acidosis, a serious condition characterized by the buildup of lactic acid in the blood, although this is rare. It is also important to note that lamivudine may cause a decrease in certain blood cell counts, which could lead to an increased risk of infections or anemia.

It is important to consult with a healthcare professional for proper guidance on the use and dosage of lamivudine, as well as monitoring for any potential side effects or drug interactions.
