MILK OG MAGNESIA

MILK OG MAGNESIA: Milk of Magnesia, also known as magnesium hydroxide, is an over-the-counter medication used as a laxative or antacid.

As a laxative, it helps relieve constipation by drawing water into the intestines, which softens the stool and promotes bowel movement. It is typically used for short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

As an antacid, Milk of Magnesia neutralizes excess stomach acid and can provide relief from heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach. It works by reacting with stomach acid to form magnesium chloride, which acts as an antacid by reducing the production of gastric acid.

The recommended dose of Milk of Magnesia for constipation in adults is 2-4 tablespoons (30-60 mL) once a day or as directed by a healthcare professional. For heartburn or acid indigestion, 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 mL) can be taken orally either once daily or as needed.

While generally safe when used as directed, Milk of Magnesia can cause some side effects. These may include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. If diarrhea persists or worsens, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.

Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Milk of Magnesia, such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. If any of these occur, immediate medical attention should be sought.

It is important to note that Milk of Magnesia should not be used continuously for more than a week without consulting a healthcare professional. Prolonged use may lead to electrolyte imbalances, such as low magnesium or potassium levels.

Always read and follow the instructions provided with the medication and ask a healthcare professional if you have any questions or concerns.
