MOMETASONE FUROATE
MOMETASONE FUROATE: Mometasone furoate is a synthetic corticosteroid drug. It is primarily used as a nasal spray or in cream or ointment form to treat symptoms of allergies, such as hay fever, as well as various skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
The mechanism of action of mometasone furoate involves its ability to bind to specific corticosteroid receptors in the cells. This binding inhibits the release of inflammatory substances, such as histamines and cytokines, which are responsible for causing the symptoms of allergies and skin inflammation. By reducing inflammation, mometasone furoate helps alleviate symptoms like itching, redness, and swelling.
The dosage and frequency of mometasone furoate vary depending on the form of the drug and the condition being treated.
For allergic rhinitis, the usual recommended dose is two sprays in each nostril once daily (total dose of 200 mcg).
For skin conditions, the cream or ointment is typically applied thinly to the affected area once daily. However, the exact dose and duration of treatment may vary based on the severity and location of the condition.
As with any medication, mometasone furoate may cause side effects. Common side effects include nasal irritation, sneezing, nosebleeds, sore throat, headache, and skin irritation. In rare cases, systemic side effects such as adrenal suppression, cataracts, glaucoma, and growth retardation in children have been reported.
It is important to follow the prescribed dose and duration of treatment as directed by the healthcare professional and to inform them of any existing medical conditions or medications being taken to minimize the risk of side effects or drug interactions.
