NAPHAZOLINE

NAPHAZOLINE: Naphazoline is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-adrenergic agonists. It is primarily used as a decongestant to relieve symptoms of nasal congestion, particularly in allergic rhinitis and sinusitis.

The mechanism of action of naphazoline involves stimulating the alpha-adrenergic receptors in the blood vessels of the nasal passages. By doing so, it constricts the blood vessels, reducing blood flow and thus relieving nasal congestion. This helps open up the nasal passages and facilitates easier breathing.

Naphazoline is available as a nasal spray or nasal drops. The typical dose for adults and children 6 years and older is 2-3 sprays/nostril or 2-3 drops/nostril every 8-10 hours, not exceeding 3 doses in 24 hours. It is important to read and follow the instructions provided with the medication or as prescribed by the healthcare professional.

While naphazoline is generally safe and well-tolerated when used as directed, it can cause some side effects. Common side effects may include temporary burning, stinging, or sneezing immediately after application. Less frequently, it may cause temporary pupil dilation (mydriasis), headache, dizziness, increased blood pressure, and dryness or irritation in the nose. If these side effects become severe or persistent, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional.

It is worth noting that naphazoline should be used only for short-term relief of nasal congestion and should not be used for more than three consecutive days, as prolonged use may result in rebound congestion. Additionally, individuals with certain medical conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, thyroid problems, or diabetes should consult their healthcare professional before using naphazoline.
