SITAGLIPTIN PHOSPHATE

SITAGLIPTIN PHOSPHATE: Sitagliptin phosphate is an oral anti-diabetic drug that belongs to the class of medications known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It is used to control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The primary mechanism of action of sitagliptin is inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which breaks down the hormone incretin. Incretin hormones play a role in regulating blood sugar levels by increasing the release of insulin and reducing the production of glucagon after meals. By inhibiting DPP-4, sitagliptin prolongs the action of incretin hormones, leading to increased insulin secretion and reduced glucose production. This mechanism helps to lower blood sugar levels and improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The usual starting dose of sitagliptin phosphate is 100mg once daily, regardless of whether the drug is taken with or without food. The dose may be adjusted based on the patient’s response and tolerability. However, it is important to follow the healthcare provider’s prescription and not exceed the recommended dosage.

Common side effects include headache, upper respiratory tract infection, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. Serious side effects are rare but may include severe joint pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), and allergic reactions. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience any severe or persistent side effects.

It is worth noting that sitagliptin phosphate works best when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise program. It is not suitable for the treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis and should not be used as a substitute for insulin. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using this medication.

As with any medication, it is important to discuss the risks, benefits, and proper usage of sitagliptin phosphate with a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice and monitor the patient’s response to treatment.
