VILDAGLIPTIN

VILDAGLIPTIN: Vildagliptin is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to a class of drugs called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors.

The main mechanism of action of vildagliptin is by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4. This enzyme breaks down incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). By inhibiting DPP-4, vildagliptin increases the levels of these hormones, which stimulate the release of insulin and reduce the release of glucagon. In turn, this helps to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

The usual recommended dose of vildagliptin is 50 mg twice daily, taken with or without food. However, the dosage may vary based on individual patient factors, so it is important to follow the instructions provided by the prescribing doctor.

Common side effects associated with vildagliptin include headache, dizziness, upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and throat), and gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea. Rarely, it may also cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or allergic reactions.

It’s worth noting that vildagliptin should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis and is generally not recommended in patients with severe kidney or liver problems. As with any medication, it is important to discuss with a healthcare professional to ensure its appropriateness and to avoid potential drug interactions or contraindications.
